Waterproofing & Breathability: How to Read Test Results

Waterproofness and breathability are key to understanding the performance of technical jackets and pants. They define a garment’s ability to shield against rain, snow, and wind while allowing moisture vapor from exertion to escape. At AYAQ, these two metrics guide the selection of recycled outer fabrics and the Sympatex membrane — the most advanced on the market, tested up to 52,000 Schmerbers and rated RET < 12. Knowing these values helps you pick the right piece for the right use.

1. Waterproofness: Understanding Schmerbers

Waterproofness is measured in “Schmerbers,” indicating the height of a water column a fabric can withstand before leaking. A garment is considered waterproof from 10,000 Schmerbers. AYAQ hardshells — SKORA (men / women), LONAK-XT (men / women), LONAK (men / women), and BATURA — reach 52,000 Schmerbers, surpassing all other outdoor membranes.

This means:

  • no water penetration in heavy rain,
  • full resistance to heavy snow,
  • protection under pressure (straps, harnesses, rocks),
  • long-lasting waterproofness.

Hardshell pants NUNATAK (men / women) (uninsulated) and BATURA (insulated) meet the same high standards.

2. Breathability: Understanding RET Values

Breathability is assessed by the RET index (Resistance to Evaporative Transfer). The lower the number, the better the breathability:

  • RET 0–6: excellent breathability,
  • RET 6–12: very good (suitable for exertion),
  • RET 12–20: adequate for moderate activity.

AYAQ hardshells feature a RET < 12, placing them in the “very good breathability” category even during intense activity — thanks to the membrane’s hydrophilic structure.

3. Why a Hydrophilic Membrane Breathes Better in Real Conditions

Traditional microporous membranes breathe through micro-pores. When these pores clog (salt, sunscreen, dust, moisture), breathability drops sharply. AYAQ’s Sympatex membrane is hydrophilic and non-microporous:

  • it has no pores that can clog,
  • it remains breathable even when saturated with water,
  • it requires less maintenance (no need to “unclog”),
  • it retains performance year after year.

This design ensures consistent performance in all weather conditions.

4. Measuring Waterproofness Isn’t Enough: The Importance of Windproofing

A garment can be waterproof but still let wind through. Wind is a major cooling factor. The Sympatex membrane is also among the best windproof membranes on the market:

  • effectively blocks wind during trail running (Vernago pants),
  • stabilizes temperature in ski touring (RIMO pants (men / women)),
  • enables hybrid softshells like RAVEN (men / women): membrane front + ultra-breathable back.

Wind management is as crucial as pure waterproofness.

5. The Importance of Recycled Outer Fabrics

Waterproofness depends not only on the membrane but also on the outer fabric. AYAQ’s recycled technical fabrics offer:

  • high abrasion resistance to protect the membrane,
  • mechanical stability in all conditions,
  • durable water repellency with PFC-free treatments.

Weak outer fabrics would reduce membrane effectiveness; that’s why AYAQ selects only premium recycled fabrics from European mills.

6. Reading a Test: What Really Matters

A good waterproof/breathable garment isn’t just about a single high value. It’s a coherent system:

  • a highly waterproof membrane (52,000 Schmerbers),
  • stable breathability (RET < 12),
  • durable outer fabric (high Martindale scores),
  • robust construction (seams, taping, ergonomics),
  • controlled European manufacturing.

At AYAQ, waterproofness and breathability are never considered separately: they form a complete system designed to support users in cold, wet, windy, or unstable environments. A system built to last multiple seasons with minimal care, protecting everywhere, in all weather.
