Merino Wool

Close to nature, AYAQ incorporates natural fibers like virgin Merino wool in some garments.
You’ve likely heard of Merino wool, but may not know the many technical and environmental benefits that make this natural fiber ideal for comfort, performance, and environmental respect.
Merino wool comes from virgin fleece of Merino sheep, which thrive in regions with extreme climate variations. To endure scorching summers, heavy rains, droughts, and intense cold, their wool must adapt and offer versatile performance.
This adaptability comes from the wool’s very fine fibers: Merino fibers are about half the diameter of standard wool fibers.
Several qualities make Merino wool highly effective for technical base layers worn directly against the skin.
Non-itchy and exceptionally soft: Fiber fineness determines softness. Wool above 25 microns can itch. AYAQ uses 17.5-micron fibers, ensuring a soft touch on all skin areas.

Warmth and insulation: The fiber’s structure traps air, providing thermoregulation and warmth, ideal for mountain activities.
Moisture management: Merino fibers naturally absorb up to 35% of their weight in moisture while remaining dry. During exertion, sweat is drawn away from the skin and released.
Odor control: Merino wool has natural antibacterial properties. Sweat bacteria cause odors, but lanolin coating and fiber structure prevent bacteria buildup, keeping odors at bay.
These odor-control features allow wearing garments for several days without smell, reducing washing frequency, saving energy and water, and lightening your load on multi-day hikes.
