Merino wool

Close to nature, AYAQ has turned, for certain garments, to natural materials such as virgin Merino wool.

You have certainly already heard about it, however perhaps without knowing the numerous technical and environmental contributions which make this natural fiber so appreciable when you are looking for comfort, performance and respect for nature.

Merino yarn comes from the virgin wool of Merino sheep, which live in regions with extreme climate variations. To withstand scorching summer heat, heavy rains in the off-season, periods of drought, and intense cold, their wool protection must be adaptable and thus possess highly versatile qualities.

And this adaptation to the harshest climatic conditions is achieved in particular thanks to wool whose fibers are very fine: a merino wool fiber measures approximately half of a “normal” wool fiber!

Several characteristics of merino wool make it a very high-performance material for certain technical clothing to be worn next to the skin, as a first layer.

Itchy and extremely soft: The fineness of the fiber will influence its softness. From 25 microns, wool can itch and prick. AYAQ uses 17.5 micron yarns that are extremely soft to the touch and in contact with all parts of the body.

Warmth and insulation: The fiber's structure, which allows it to store a lot of air, makes wool thermoregulating and warm. It is therefore particularly suitable for mountain activities.

Moisture absorption: Due to its natural qualities, merino fiber is able to absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture while remaining dry. During exercise, less sweat remains on the skin because the fiber absorbs this moisture and then wicks it away.

Anti-odor: Merino wool has a natural antibacterial effect. Bacteria from perspiration are the elements that cause unpleasant odors. Thanks to the structure of merino wool fibers, and the lanolin (a natural substance) that naturally coats these fibers, bacteria cannot attach themselves and unpleasant odors are prevented.

Its anti-odor properties allow you to wear your garment for several days without unpleasant odors. This saves on washing machines, energy, and water. You can also go hiking for several days without having to carry too many changes of clothes.

Certifications

The virgin merino wool used by AYAQ comes from respectful and sustainable farms.

It is certified non-mulesed, for the respect and well-being of animals. Mulesing is an unfortunately common and cruel operation towards animals, which consists of cutting a large slice of flesh around the tail.

The wool used by AYAQ has the following certifications: B Corp and ZQ
