Waterproofness & breathability: how to read test results

Waterproofness and breathability are two key concepts for understanding the performance of a technical jacket or pair of trousers. They determine a garment’s ability to protect against rain, snow and wind while allowing the body to release the water vapour produced during exertion. At AYAQ, these two indicators guide the choice of recycled outer fabrics and the Sympatex membrane — the most advanced on the market, tested up to 52,000 Schmerbers and rated RET < 12. Understanding these values helps you choose the right piece for the right activity.

1. Waterproofness: understanding Schmerbers

Waterproofness is measured in “Schmerbers”, a unit indicating the height of the water column a fabric can withstand before water penetrates it. A garment is considered waterproof from 10,000 Schmerbers. AYAQ hardshells — SKORA (men / women), LONAK-XT (men / women), LONAK (men / women) and BATURA — achieve 52,000 Schmerbers, a level that surpasses all other membranes on the outdoor market.

In practical terms, this means:

  • no water penetration in sustained rain,
  • complete resistance to heavy snow,
  • protection even under pressure (shoulder straps, harnesses, rocks),
  • long-lasting waterproofness.

The NUNATAK (men / women) (uninsulated) and BATURA (insulated) hardshell trousers meet the same exacting standards.

2. Breathability: understanding RET values

A fabric’s breathability is assessed using the RET index (Resistance to Evaporative Transfer). The lower the number, the better the breathability:

  • RET 0–6: excellent breathability,
  • RET 6–12: very good (suitable for physical exertion),
  • RET 12–20: adequate for moderate activities.

AYAQ hardshells have a RET < 12, placing them in the “very good breathability” category, even during intense activity — a performance made possible by the membrane’s hydrophilic structure.

3. Why a hydrophilic membrane breathes better in real-world conditions

Traditional microporous membranes breathe through micro-holes. When these pores become clogged or saturated (salt, sunscreen, dust, moisture), breathability drops dramatically. AYAQ’s Sympatex membrane, by contrast, is hydrophilic and non-microporous:

  • it has no pores that can clog,
  • it remains breathable even when saturated with water,
  • it requires less maintenance (no need to “unclog” it),
  • it maintains its performance year after year.

This is how AYAQ can guarantee consistent performance in all weather conditions.

4. Measuring waterproofness is not enough: the importance of wind-proof protection

A garment can be waterproof yet still let wind through. Wind, however, is one of the main causes of heat loss. The Sympatex membrane is also one of the best wind-proof membranes on the market:

  • it effectively protects against apparent wind when trail running (Vernago trousers),
  • it keeps your temperature stable when ski touring (RIMO trousers (men / women)),
  • it enables the design of hybrid softshells such as RAVEN (men / women): a membrane at the front + an ultra-breathable back.

Wind protection is therefore just as important a criterion as waterproofness itself.

5. The importance of recycled outer fabrics

Waterproofness does not depend solely on the membrane: the outer fabric plays a crucial role. AYAQ’s recycled technical fabrics offer:

  • high abrasion resistance to protect the membrane,
  • mechanical stability in all conditions,
  • durable water repellency thanks to PFC-free treatments.

A weak outer fabric would reduce the membrane’s effectiveness; this is why AYAQ selects only premium recycled fabrics sourced from European mills.

6. Reading a test: what really matters

A good waterproof/breathable garment is not one that achieves a single high rating. It is a cohesive combination of:

  • a highly waterproof membrane (52,000 Schmerbers),
  • consistent breathability (RET < 12),
  • a durable outer fabric (high Martindale test results),
  • durable construction (seams, seam taping, ergonomics),
  • carefully controlled manufacturing in Europe.

At AYAQ, waterproofness and breathability are never considered separately: they form a complete system, designed to support the wearer in cold, wet, windy or changeable environments. A system built to last for several seasons with minimal maintenance, and to protect everywhere, in all weather conditions.
